Rhode Island Fishing Report

Date:  2026-06-09

Holdover Stripers & Salt Ponds:  Also heard from customers fishing some of the reefs outside the river and to west who have had good striper action as well. Along with striped bass, anglers are catching some nice-sized bluefish, and that bite seems to be starting off a bit more consistently than in years past.

Trout Opener & Freshwater:  Freshwater anglers are reporting quality largemouth catches, post-spawn, and the trout fishing is as strong as ever following increased stocking and settled weather. Freshwater anglers are still finding strong trout action on mealworms, PowerBait, and nightcrawlers, while the largemouth are eating medium shiners and Yamamoto worms.

Tautog Outlook:  With blackfish closed until August, it’s time to focus on other bottom dwellers.

Highlight Catches:  The bass in the deep water rips seem to be running from around slot size to the 20-pound range and the first reports of bluefish there also came in over the past few days. The breachways, rocky areas along the beaches, and the waters around Block Island are all fishing well for bass right now and you can catch fish ranging from 20 inches up to 40-plus pounds.

Recent Changes:  Most designated trout waters are stocked prior to the opening day of trout season. Opening Day of Trout Season occurs annually on the second Saturday in April and continues through the last day of February at midnight.
