ThrillFishing Toolbox Part 2: Advanced Tools and Tips
JuLY 2020
In this article I will cover some other information troves beyond CT including NY State and other varied resources. Â Â The fisheries departments of many states have developed very useful websites that cover their unique fishing opportunities.
 New York State
As Connecticut is a geographical neighbor to New York, many of the same fish species and fishing tactics are relevant. New York has some outstanding and different fisheries. The Great Lakes (Ontario, Erie) offer opportunities for large Salmon and Trout fishing including Steelhead Trout that are world famous. Anglers travel from all over to fish the Fall Salmon runs and the Winter Steelhead runs in tributaries such as the Salmon River in Pulaski, NY and the Oswego River in Oswego, NY. My personal best Brown Trout was from the Salmon River and weighed over 23 pounds. The current NY State record is over 33 pound and was caught out of Lake Ontario! These are unique and special fisheries.
New York has a great web site that covers the various fisheries in the state and some content for youth and beginner anglers.

Selected Online Resources
I have used these sites (and this is a subset) in my quest for knowledge about fishing. Many of these sites have corresponding YouTube and other social media channels and some have periodic podcasts/net casts and a few even have TV shows. There is a LOT of information out there. These are not listed in any specific order.
Drake magazine is a print and online publication that focuses on fly fishing. It is a very beautifully designed magazine with high quality design and a flare for spectacular photos. They cover areas of conservation, tactics and other topics related to fly fishing. I am a past subscriber.
 https://www.takemefishing.org/
Takemefishing.org is a web site developed by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation. It has many articles and links to fishing resources of all kinds including state by state sites and locations.
A regional site with articles and reports from local shops and boat captains covering both fresh and saltwater angling. They publish a magazine both online and in print. I subscribe to their print magazine.
I am certainly looking for feedback, suggestions and most definitely fish stories. You can contact me by email – [email protected]
