Late September on Long Island Sound usually starts with easy fishing. You drop an Asian shore crab on a quarter-ounce jig next to the breakwall at Clinton or the rocks off Penfield Reef, and you have dinner in twenty minutes. By mid-October, those same rocks go quiet. Two sharp nor’easters blow through, the surface water drops below 60 degrees, and the blackfish slip off into 35 to 60 feet of water.

Here is an approach to help you catch Tautog throughout the fall season by tracking the water temperatures and focused depth ranges.


Water Temperature Dictates Depth

Water temperature drives blackfish depth throughout the fall. As coastal waters cool, fish stage in distinct depth zones:

  • Early Fall (65°F to 68°F): Tautog hold shallow in 10 to 25 feet of water. Breakwalls, rocky points, and shallow harbor ledges offer crabs and mussels warmed by the afternoon sun.
  • Mid-Fall Transition (58°F to 64°F): Fish shift out to mid-depth structure in 25 to 45 feet. Submerged humps, rip-rap along shipping channels, and moderate boulder piles hold the bulk of the population.
  • Late Fall Migration (52°F to 57°F): Fish push into deep offshore structure in 45 to 75 feet. Tautog gather tightly around deep rock piles, wreck edges, and high-relief glacial erratics where bottom temperatures stay stable.

Structure and Sonar

Tautog stick to structure. If your boat swings fifteen feet off a rock pile, your crab sits in mud. You end up catching sea robins and dogfish while the boat anchored fifty yards away fills their tags.

Idle across the area at three knots before putting an anchor in the water. Watch your side-scan sonar for hard, bright returns and sharp shadows that mark the highest boulders. Waypoint the exact edge where boulder piles meet the flat bottom. That transition holds the feeding fish.


Anchoring with a Heading Sensor

Current on the Sound swings a boat through a wide arc on a single anchor. Because standard GPS only shows direction when moving, you 100% need a heading sensor to locate fish and hold position. A heading sensor shows the true orientation of your hull at rest, which lets you figure out where the stern will settle before you drop line.

Strong tidal current or crosswinds will pull a single anchor off the spot every fifteen minutes. Drop a primary bow anchor up-current, pay out line past the mark, set a second anchor off the stern quarter, and crank both lines tight. The hull stays locked directly above the rock.

In deep water late in the season, white-leggers draw bites when green crabs sit untouched. Crack the shell slightly with your thumb before dropping down so the scent leaks out quickly in cold water.


Jigs vs. Dropper Rigs

Heavy current in 50 feet of water sweeps a jig off the bottom. Switch to a dropper rig with four to eight ounces of bank sinker, fifty-pound fluorocarbon leader, and a sharp 4/0 beak hook. The lead stays planted on the rock face where the fish hide.


Timing the Hookset

Swinging on the first tap leaves you with an empty hook. Small bergalls or blackfish pecking at the shell make that quick rattle. Wait for the rod tip to pull down with steady, heavy weight as the fish walks the crab back to its throat teeth. Lift the rod in one long, smooth sweep and crank immediately to turn the fish’s head before it dives into a hole.
