Stonington Police Department’s Marine Unit have observed significant narrowing of the channel, which may impact vessels transiting the area. Mariners should exercise extreme caution when navigating the channel.

Hours of operation are from 6 am to 4 pm. 6 Shugart sectional barges will be installed at piers 15 and 18 outside navigation channel. A barge will be operating in the navigation channel for bridge washing during month of January in 2026, 2027 and 2028 (tentative). Shoal is encroaching from the East side of the channel and protruding west. Shoaling has also been identified in several other areas north of buoy 2, below charted depth, extending into the upper pond. Mariners without local knowledge are advised to transit with extreme caution, paying particular attention to tidal range. Mariners are urged to use caution while transiting the area.

On scene equipment will consist of two tugboats keeping the M/V Minchah on station during cargo operations. Two anchors will be deployed off the bow of the vessel. The on-scene vessels will be monitoring VHF CH 13 and 16. Questions may be directed to Mr. Lucas Romanowsky at (617) 510-6161. Mariners are advised to use caution, avoid the area if possible and expect prop wash in the vicinity of the tugs.
Bridges Providence River – Seekonk River/General/Bridges/Construction RHODE ISLAND- WASHINGTON BRIDGE (RIDOT BRIDGE NO. 700) – SEEKONK RIVER- General Construction – Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will begin preliminary construction work for the new Washington Bridge. From May 18, 2026, to June 29, 2029, there will be ongoing bridge construction operations Monday-Friday from 7:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Construction equipment and barges will be positioned outside of the navigation channel. For the next three months, there will be no reduction to the bridge horizontal or vertical clearances and no closures to the navigation channel. Mariners are advised to exercise caution and reduce wake when transiting the area. Generation will scale up in the weeks ahead. Block Island Wind Farm (BIWF) RAM XII is on site for maintenance into fall. Sunrise Wind (SRW) SCYLLA and supporting vessels are installing wind turbine generators (WTGs). Components are stored in New London, CT. Barge 455-8 and tugs SAM and OCEAN SKY transport one complete WTG per roundtrip. LEVIATHAN is stationed at AU08 for offshore converter station commissioning. ADHEMAR DE SAINT- VENANT will continue export cable trenching and survey through the end of June. Areas of exposed or insufficiently buried cable may require protection measures. Contact Guard Vessels on scene before conducting bottom-contacting activities. BOKALIFT 2 and supporting vessels are installing foundations. BOKALIFT 1 and supporting vessels are installing secondary steel. GO ADVENTURER is conducting the pre-lay grapnel run along SRW inter-array cable corridors. On or around June 27, BOKA OCEAN will begin inter-array cable installation. NDEAVOR will begin trenching on or around July 2. There may be areas of exposed cable. The event will take place on Saturday May 23, 2026 from 8:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Mariners are requested to maintain a minimum distance of 190 yards from the fireworks launching platform. Equipment on scene will be a support vessel, AUV with a boat in tow, monitoring VHF-FM CH 16.

The buoy will be moored using a double catenary system with a 200 lb concrete anchor. High-flyer marker buoys with radar reflectors will be attached to enhance visibility.

While material barges are on site, the width of the channel will be reduced from 400 feet to approximately 335 feet.
